Start with Newton County Inmate Search
The official online channel for Newton County inmate records is the sheriff-linked OffenderIndex Newton County portal. The Newton County Sheriff's Office links its Inmate Search menu item to that portal, which is labeled Inmate Information and branded through Eagle Advantage Solutions. The portal is free in the public view and does not display a login requirement.
Use this channel for current Newton County Detention Center custody, bookings over the last 24 hours, and booking-date searches. The portal is not designed to prove a conviction, show every court filing, or track a sentenced person after transfer to GDC custody. For current jail status, it is the best first stop. For older booking records, court charges, certified copies, or records not visible online, the sheriff's open-records process and Clerk search become important.
The main roster screenshot shows the exact tab layout used for the public lookup. It is sourced from the Newton County OffenderIndex inmate-search portal.
Those tabs are the reason a search for a current inmate and a search for a past booking should not be handled the same way.
Use the Newton County Jail Roster
The Newton County jail roster offers three practical search lanes. Current Inmates is for a person believed to be in custody now. Bookings Over Last 24 Hours is for a very recent arrest that may not be easy to find by date yet. Inmates by Booking Date is for a date-based search, and the portal source shows an option to include previous inmates when that flag is enabled.
- Open the sheriff's Inmate Search link or go directly to the OffenderIndex Newton County portal.
- Choose Current Inmates when the person is believed to be held at the Newton County Detention Center now.
- Enter first name, last name, or both. The research did not find a visible required marker on the name fields.
- Use Bookings Over Last 24 Hours if the arrest is new and the current grid does not help.
- Use Inmates by Booking Date for a broader date search. Leave both date boxes blank to view all inmates if the portal permits it.
- Check Include Previous Inmates In Search when available, while expecting a longer search time.
- Expand the row to review charges, bond, sentence, visitation, history, and other details when the portal returns a match.
Newton County Roster Search Fields
The roster field inventory is more specific than a generic "name search." The Current Inmates and 24-hour tabs use first and last name filters. The booking-date tab adds date pickers, a stop-date field, and the previous-inmate option. The portal source also includes Search and Clear buttons for each lane, with the Search button initially disabled until the grid loads in the current-inmate tab.
| Field Label | Type | Required | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Current Inmates tab | Tab | Optional | Opens the current inmate grid. |

| Search | Button | N/A | Runs the filter for the active tab. |
| Clear | Button | N/A | Clears the active tab's fields. |
| Bookings Over Last 24 Hours tab | Tab | Optional | Opens the recent-bookings grid. |
| Inmates by Booking Date tab | Tab | Optional | Opens the booking-date search grid. |
| Select Date Range | Date picker inputs | Optional | Start and stop dates; the portal sets a default range of about the past month. |
| Include Previous Inmates In Search | Checkbox | Optional | Portal warning says it may take an extended amount of time. |
Newton County Inmate Profile Fields
A Newton County inmate record can show different fields depending on what has been populated for that person. The public source template includes a row/profile view, charge tab, sentence tab, visitation tab, history tab, and other-information tab. Direct non-browser API requests were blocked, so the build relies on public HTML/source templates and visible page controls instead of private data.
The mugshot/photo item deserves care. The row template contains an image element, but the portal configuration observed in June 2026 returns false for public photo display. That means Newton County booking photos should not be promised from this roster. The Newton County jail mugshots page covers the booking-photo request path and Georgia mugshot law in more detail.
| Field | What It Shows |
|---|---|
| Name | First and last name in the public row. |
| Status | Booked or custody status from the vendor field. |
| Sex, Height, Weight | Physical descriptors when populated. |
| Address | Roster-provided address field from the public template. |
| Arrest Date and Time | Arrest or booking timing as presented by the portal. |
| Days In Jail | Calculated current custody length. |
| Arresting Officer | Officer field from the source template. |
| Total Bond | Aggregate bond amount when populated. |
| Charges | Warrant number, counts, statute, description, offense type, and court. |
| Sentence / Release Date | Sentence and release information when a sentence tab is populated. |
| Other | Inmate ID, date of birth, age, and prison location. |
When Newton County Records Do Not Appear
A missing roster result does not prove that the person was never arrested or is not in custody somewhere else. A new booking can lag. A name may be spelled differently. A person may have bonded out, been moved to state custody, been taken on a federal matter, or be held in immigration detention. The booking-date tab can help with past inmates, but it is still one vendor portal.
Use a fallback chain instead of repeating the same search. Call the sheriff's main number at 678-625-1403 or the detention leader number at 678-625-1420 for jail-routing questions. Visit the public lobby at 15151 Alcovy Road when in-person service is needed. For a written record, use the sheriff's public-records process. For court status, use the Clerk. For sentenced state prisoners, use GDC. For federal or immigration custody, use BOP or ICE.
Custody note: County jail records, court records, GDC records, BOP records, and ICE records are separate systems. A person can move from one to another after arrest.
Request Newton County Booking Records
The sheriff's public-records process is the main way to request Newton County inmate records that are not visible through the roster. The NCSO public-records page names Lt. Michael Cunningham as Open Records Custodian and lists openrecords@newtonsheriffga.org plus 678-625-1413. The online form asks for requester details, the record description, certification preference, delivery choice, signature or name, and date.
A strong request names the person, date of birth if known, approximate arrest or booking date, and exact record sought. That may be a booking record, incident report, booking photograph, jail record, or certified copy request. NCSO says it will notify the requester within three business days if responsive records exist and whether they are subject to release. Fees can include search, retrieval, redaction, copying, and supervised inspection.
The sheriff's open-records screenshot shows the custodian and fee language used for this fallback. It comes from the Newton County Sheriff's Office public-records information page.
Written requests are especially useful when the roster result has dropped off or when a certified copy is needed.

Newton County Inmate Visitation
After a Newton County inmate record confirms the person is in local custody, visitation and communication move through HomeWAV rather than ordinary in-person visitation. The sheriff's FAQ says in-person jail visits are suspended until further notice, and video visitation is through HomeWAV. Each inmate has a prearranged time, so the outside user must create an account, select the Newton County Sheriff's Office, choose the inmate, add funds, and wait for approval.
| Type | Days | Hours | Length | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| HomeWAV video visitation | Tuesday, Friday, Sunday | 9:00 a.m.-7:00 p.m. | 30 minutes | Each inmate has a prearranged time; the inmate initiates the call. |
| In-person visits | Suspended per FAQ | Not active | Not active | Use HomeWAV until further notice. |
The HomeWAV screenshot confirms the sheriff's posted video-visitation workflow. It comes from the Newton County Sheriff's Office visitation page.
Staying logged in matters because the inmate must see that the outside user is available to receive the call.
Newton County Inmate Mail and Money
Newton County mail rules are specific. Mail should be addressed to the inmate name and ID number at 15151 Alcovy Road, Covington, GA 30014. Letters and photos are scanned into a kiosk where inmates view them. Inmates do not keep the original letters or photos, and original photos are returned to the sender.
Money can be deposited by mail-in money order, lobby kiosk, or JailATM. JailATM requires the depositor to select Georgia and Newton County Sheriff's Office, then enter name, address, Social Security number, email, phone, and the resident's name. Jail phone service is Paytel Communication at 1-800-729-8355.

Newton County GDC and Federal Searches
For sentenced state prisoners, use the Georgia Department of Corrections offender query. It supports name, alias, gender, race, age, physical-description fields, sentence status, offense, county, institution, active or inactive scope, photo-list output, GDC ID, and case number. GDC does list Newton County Jail in its location directory, but as a county jail entry, not a state prison.
Federal custody uses the BOP inmate locator for BOP records, while immigration custody uses the ICE Online Detainee Locator System. Georgia VINELink is a custody-notification channel. The Newton County Sheriff's Office app also links users to public-safety tools, including Inmate Search and Warrants, but research did not confirm that the app has a separate roster database.
Newton County Jail Record Terms
Jail and court terms are often mixed together during the first few days after arrest. These terms help separate the roster view from court and state-custody records. For the prosecutor-filed side of the case, use Newton County court records after jail arrest along with the Clerk's case-search channel.
